New Orleans East Bridge Repairs
Durr Heavy Construction partnered with the City of New Orleans to execute repairs on three bridges in New Orleans East, located at:
• Mayo Blvd. and Morrison Blvd.
• Benson Canal Crossing and Lake Forest Blvd.
• Citrus Canal Crossing and Lake Forest Blvd.
At each site, the stabilized slope paving was removed and replaced after extensive repairs to the wooden pilings had been completed. The project initially required having 26 piles removed and spliced. Durr proposed an alternative and more cost-effective solution to repair the piles, using a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Composite system. This allowed the City of New Orleans to repair an additional 24 piles that were only able to be assessed once the bridges were dammed off and the underwater portion of the piles was exposed. The pilings were remediated via a designed system of incorporating composite materials and epoxies to increase the original strength to an engineering factor of 1.6%. The scope of work on this $753,000 city-funded project also included repairing damaged pile caps, removing and replacing existing decking and beams, and completing other structural component repairs.
