St. Bernard Port

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the St. Bernard Parish Port was used as a base of operations by FEMA for first-responders and other officials due to its high elevation. Three different sites at the port were used by FEMA, and housed an average of 50 trailers each. The sites were outfitted with overhead transmission lines, underground facilities, and roadways. Though these sites were an emergency lifeline to thousands of residents after the storm, they were a far cry from their original purpose as a port. The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s selected Durr Heavy Construction to return the port to its pre-Katrina condition.
