Hurricane Katrina was the reason for the commissioning of the National Guard Covington Readiness Center, and 15 other such centers in Louisiana. The plan was to increase the ability of the Louisiana National Guard to respond to disaster. This is the first of the 15 to be completed. The 3.4 acre site features a 30,000 sq. ft. center and includes classrooms, a fitness room, kitchen, recruiting center, family support center and weapons vault. The site can also be used as staging area in case of disasters and supports 92 soldiers of the Company A (Det. 1) 205th Engineering Combat Battalion Heavy.
Durr Heavy Construction was tapped to demolish all existing structures on the site and prepare all storm drainage, earthwork, utilities and paving for the general contractor.
