Bonnabel High Students Visit Durr

HARAHAN, LA (May 2, 2008) –

On Friday, May 2nd, nine students from Bonnabel High School’s industrial arts class spent the day with the staff of Durr Heavy Construction, LLC.

The group began their morning by going over job site safety and other personal protection policies.  Once this was completed, they donned hardhats and safety vest and headed out to the Harahan Pump to the River project.  Here the students and their teacher, Kenny Caliva, were able to see several key construction items including placing drain pipes, setting steel piles and proper use of heavy equipment.

“Our hope is to educate the future generation on what they can expect to do and see if they go into the construction industry,” said Don Bonewitz, Director of Human Resources and Safety.  “By showing these guys that they can have a profitable and rewarding career right out of high school, we not only help to fill the void in skilled workers but also develop productive citizens that are helping the area recover.”

After the site visit, the students visited Durr’s Mississippi River office where the equipment and mechanic shop are located.  The group was able to see heavy equipment up close and ask questions of the employees that maintains the multimillion dollar fleet.

“This has been a great opportunity for the students to really see what it means to work in the construction industry,” Caliva said, “and we hope to do this on an annual basis.”
